Scotch Plains residents live in a diverse, affluent, and family-friendly suburban community in Union County, New Jersey, known for its good schools, strong community life, and convenient access to New York City via the nearby Fanwood train station. The population is over 24,000, with a median household income significantly above the national average, and many residents own their homes.

History

Scotch Plains’ history began with settlement by the Native American Lenni Lenape people before European exploration in the 16th century, followed by Dutch claims in the early 17th century. Scottish immigrants led by George Scot established a settlement in 1684, giving the area its name. The community developed as a farming village and stagecoach stop, played a role in the American Revolutionary War with events like the Battle of Short Hills, and later grew into a modern suburban community after the arrival of the railroad and major roadways.

Parks in the township include:

  • Watchung Reservation is a 1,945-acre (787 ha) nature reserve on the north side of the township that includes open space, playgrounds, nature trails, a nature and science center, gardens, stables, and many other amenities.
  • Ponderosa Farm Park is a park on Cooper Road. Modest park featuring playgrounds and a sprinkler area, plus open green spaces and restrooms.
  • Scotch Hills Municipal Golf Course, known as the Shady Rest Golf and Country Club before it was taken over by the township, was at one time the only African-American country club in the United States.[55]
  • Ashbrook Golf Course, is a public golf course with 18-holes of championship golf as well as a 9-hole pitch and putt course located on Raritan Road in Scotch Plains.
  • Shackamaxon Country Club is a private golf course, swimming and tennis facility also hosting celebrations, founded in 1916 and is located on Shackamaxon Drive in Scotch Plains. Some of its 130+ acres occupy land in Westfield.
